ABOUT ME
PLEASE NOTE: You are welcome to email me directly at dthickey@indiana.edu.

I use design-based research methods and situative theories of cognition to improve learning and instruction. I focus on "participatory" approaches to assessment, motivation, & credentialing, and work in e-learning, videogames, open learning, & new media contexts. In recent years, strands of work have come together in a framework I call "Participatory Learning and Assessment." It has proven quite effective at fostering social engagement in ways that also increases individual knowledge and group achievement. I also teach graduate courses in the Learning Sciences program.

From 2012-2014 I directed Open Badges Design Principles Documentation Project. This project is examining the design principles emerging across the 30 projects funded by the MacArthur Foundation's Badges for Lifelong Learning Initiative.

In 2013, I received a grant from Google to offer a "Big Open Online Course" ("BOOC") on Educational Assessment. This participatory alternative to MOOCs was successfully offered to hundreds of learners in Fall 2013 and Summer 2014. Also in 2013 I began an exciting collaboration with the fully-online Indiana University High School. My students and I are remaking conventional distance education courses use the Participatory Learning and Assessment (PLA) framework that pulls together lots of prior research on disciplinary engagement, motivation, grading, accountability, and assessment.

In 2014-2016, I am directing the Open Badges for Open edX and Beyond project. Funded by the MacArthur Foundation, this project aims to massively expand the worthwhile use of open digital badges in higher education. The project aims to have badging technology and an open case library for all of the major learning management systems now in use in higher education, starting with Open edX.
