I am an Assistant Professor of Literacy, Culture and Language Education (LCLE) at the Indiana University School of Education, where I teach classes in literacy theory and in the English-as-a-second language and World Languages teacher education programs. I am an educational linguist with a strong background in language learning and cross-cultural experience in non-Western contexts. I was a 2006-2008 Spencer/National Academy of Education Postdoctoral Fellow and a finalist in the 2006 National Council of Teachers of English Promising Researcher award. From 2008-2011, I was the faculty advisor to the Books & Beyond project, a co-curricular service-learning project by the Global Village Living-Learning Center that supports storytelling and book publishing by elementary and middle school students in the United States and Rwanda. I currently serve on the board of Books & Beyond. My research interests include language awareness and the flows of English literacy practices across global boundaries. I have particular interests in understanding the nature of meta-knowledge about language and the role that it plays in critical literacy and language learning. I received a 2012 Margot Stern Strom Teaching Award from Facing History and Ourselves.
I am an adjunct faculty member in the African Studies Program and an affiliated faculty member with the Center for the Study of Global Change, both in the IU School of International Studies. |
